Wellington Zoo is passionate about learning. We love being able to create those ‘wow’ moments that help students get up close with some of our amazing animals, gain an understanding of the role of a progressive zoo, and discover what they can do to care for the natural world.

About the programme

Please note applications for The Warehouse Zoofari programme are currently on hold.

All kids deserve a magical day at the Zoo. The Warehouse Zoofari is a nationwide programme that focuses on conservation education. We’re extremely proud of our ongoing partnership with The Warehouse that provides funding for low decile schools in the lower North Island to bring their students to visit the Zoo and have a magical learning experience for free.

Each year, The Warehouse raises funds which provide free transportation, entry to the Zoo and an Educator-led conservation programme for decile 1 – 3 schools. After each learning session, Zoofari groups can continue to explore the Zoo for the day, attend animal and conservation-themed talks, participate in visitor activities and enjoy free-choice learning.

A huge thank you to The Warehouse and their generous customers for making this possible.

Your Session

Your day will consist of being picked up by the bus in the morning, a mixture of free time within the Zoo and educator lead learning sessions, before heading back to school. Learning sessions are approximately 45 minutes long. Check out our session topics and we will work with you to link these with your in-class learning.

There is also a resource booklet below that can be used to support your pre and post-visit learning and an FAQ guide.

Zoo Sleepovers

A Wellington Zoo Sleepover may be available for schools from further afield (Taranaki district, Hawkes Bay district, Ruapehu district and Wairoa district) with the opportunity of an overnight adventure at the Zoo and wake to the howling of Dingos and call of the Gibbons. Numbers are strictly limited to 45 people per school, including adults.

Your Session

Dates available for this amazing experience are during May and June each year. We will do our best to find a date that suits your busy school calendar.
